Saint Augustine of Hippo Prayer Card

Prayer to the Holy Spirit

by St. Augustine:

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit,

that my work, too, may be holy.

Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit,

that I love but what is holy,

to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit,

that I always may be holy.

Saint Augustine of Hippo became a great saint because of his mother, Saint Monica’s prayers.  She prayed for 30 years.  He loved the world, even had a mistress and a son by her. He was an early Catholic theologian and philosopher,  whose writings influenced the development of Western Christianity and Western philosophy.  He is famous for writing his book,  Confessions.  In this book, which was autobiographical, he talked about his life before and after his conversion.  He also wrote City of God and On Christian Doctrine  He said, “Late have I loved Thee, Thou Beauty ever old and ever new” and from the Confessions:   “My heart is restless until it rests in Thee.”   His feast day is August 28.
